Bat World Hoosier Hills was formed in the fall of
2004 to facilitate bat rescue, rehabilitation,
conservation, education, and research in Indiana.
We work closely with Bat World South Indy to
achieve these goals. Bat World Hoosier Hills is located in beautiful
south-central Indiana, in the university town of
Bloomington.

Twelve
different species of bats have been found in
Indiana. The most commonly found species are the
Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus
fuscus), pictured, the Little Brown Bat (Myotis
lucifugus), the Eastern Red Bat (Lasiurus
borealis), the Eastern Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus
subflavus), and the Northern Long-eared Bat (Myotis
septentrionalis). Less common are the
Silver-haired Bat (Lasionycteris
noctivagans) and the Hoary Bat (Lasiurus
cinereus).
State endangered species are the
Southeastern Bat (Myotis ausroriparius) and the Evening Bat (Nycticeius humeralis). Indiana has two federally endangered species,
which are the Gray Bat (Myotis
grisescens) and the Indiana Bat (Myotis
sodalis). One other bat that has been found in
Indiana is Rafinesque’s Big-eared Bat. It is
currently listed on the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources website as a species of Special
Concern, though some sources say that it has not
been seen in Indiana in over 25 years. |
