According to U.S Senate Resolution 33, which urges the Canadian government to end its commercial seal hunt, Canada has authorized a quota of nearly 1,000,000 harp seals to be killed over a 3-year period. The vast majority of seals hunted are pups between 12 days old and 12 weeks of age, many of which have not yet eaten their first solid meal or learned to swim. An independent veterinary report submitted to the U.S. Senate concluded that as many as 42 percent of the seals studied were likely skinned while alive and conscious.

An international outcry against the Canadian seal hunts in the 1970s and early 1980s resulted in the 1983 ban of whitecoat and blueback seal skins by the European Union and led to the subsequent collapse of the commercial seal hunt in Canada. Unfortunately, the hunts have returned, so various organizations throughout the world, including the U.S. Humane Society, have asked consumers to consider alternatives for various Canadian goods and services.

As the pictures below show, this is not a matter of a handful of native indians hunting seals for food and clothing, but rather mainstream citizens in nylon ski jackets and parkas who inflict pain and suffering on a massive scale for the sake of money. On average, sealers receive less than 5% of their income from sealing which provides only a few days' work each year. In fact, the Canadian seal hunt is supported by millions of dollars in government subsidies and has extended an industry that has ceased to exist in other developed countries. There are millions of ways to earn a decent and honorable living in this world, especially in a modern nation such as Canada, without resorting to this type of unnecessary brutality.

"It's just horrific out there. There is blood all across the ice and seal carcasses as far as the eye can see. We've seen seals that were moving around and breathing, that have been left in these piles, some left conscious and crawling." -- Rebecca Aldworth of The Humane Society of the United States and native Newfoundlander who has observed the seal hunt for the past six years.

Wildlife rehabbers and volunteers, as well as many veterinarians, spend their own money and time to help injured and sick wildlife, while others brutally kill and mutilate wildlife for money. Many of our good Canadian friends have contacted their government leaders to express their outrage over the Canadian seal hunts. You too can make your opposition known by spending your vacation dollars at alternative resorts and writing or e-mailing the Canadian Tourism Commission using the contact information listed here to explain your decision. Please consider helping those who work tirelessly to help our wildlife. Thank you.
