PLEASE JOIN
US IN OUR FIGHT TO SAVE BATS
|
| |
Our work began in 1989, with the rehabilitation of one tiny, injured bat. Since then we
have been involved in a variety of conservation initiatives geared directly toward saving
thousands of bats and protecting the habitat they need to survive.
Please see a list of these programs below.
Bat World Sanctuary is an entirely volunteer, 501c(3) non-profit
organization.
Thousands of displaced, orphaned and injured bats are rescued and rehabilitated
at the Bat World facility every year. Up to 80% of these bats are returned to the wild
again. Bats that are not releasable are given lifetime sanctuary.
Membership donations help to buy food, medical supplies, and
maintain our sanctuaries. Please see our
Accomplishments page to see how your
membership dollars are spent. |

OUR
PROGRAMS |
REHABILITATION
We've developed treatments for a variety of conditions in
micro-bats and published a
comprehensive medical reference. Our book, Captive
Care and Medical Reference for the Rehabilitation of Insectivorous Bats, is
being used to rehabilitate bats worldwide. We also provide Bat
World Bootcamp, the only workshop available
on the rehabilitation of insectivorous bats. Our
List-serve, World
Bat Line, is utilized by hundreds of bat
rehabilitators across the world for immediate help in
saving bats. |
RESCUE
CENTERS
We are developing
a national network of rescue centers dedicated to the
rescue and rehabilitation of North American bat species.
Our rescue centers
provide
rescue, rehabilitation and release or permanent sanctuary
for bats, promote the humane treatment of captive bats,
protect wild bats and wild bat colonies from abuse and
destruction, and promote bat conservation through public
awareness.
|
EDUCATION
We educate thousands of school children a year about the
benefits of bats as well as the potential dangers of
handling wild animals. Bat World Sanctuary has been
featured on Animal Planet, the Disney Channel,
Nickelodeon, PBS, Late Night with David Letterman, the CBS
Early Show and 20/20. |
WILD SANCTUARY
We are purchasing a building being used as habitat by a colony of
30,000 displaced
Mexican free-tailed bats. This colony, once slated for extermination, now has a permanent
refuge in this building, which also serves as a wild sanctuary for thousands of migrating
bats that use it as a stop-over site. About 500 female Mexican free-tailed bats also
gather at this building every summer to bear and raise their single baby. |
RESEARCH
We have conducted the first successful mating behavior study of Mexican
free-tailed bats which resulted in knowledge that will impact future conservation efforts
to preserve wild populations of this rapidly disappearing species. |
NATIONWIDE HELP
We have developed a list consisting of hundreds of bat rehabilitators throughout North
America, enabling us to locate help for the thousands of people in both the US and
Internationally who find injured and orphaned bats every year.
